The difference between Moisturizing oils vs Sealing Oils.

Yes, natural oils are amazing for your hair and skin but using the right oil the wrong way can do more harm than good.
Yes I know it sounds crazy but let me explain.
Most oils fit into 2 categories, some oils fit both. Moistizing oils and sealing oils. Both oils are necessary, but the oils must be used properly for maximum benefits and results.
Moisturizing oils are oils that penetrate the hair shaft and skin and are best used with water or water based leave in conditioners.
Here's a few examples of moisturizing oils although some of these oils both moisturize and seal your hair shaft and or skin.
  • Avocado oil :
is rich in oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid.
  • Argan oil :
rich antioxidants in tocopherols ( vitamin e) , medium chain fatty acids, carotenoids, squalene, and oleic acid.
  • Coconut oil (both)
rich in saturated fats.
  • Jojoba  oil (both)
rich in vitamin E, vitamin B complex, silicon, chromium, zinc and copper. Rich in Iodine.
  • Black seed oil :
All I'm going to say is It is rumored to cure everything but death.
  • Babasu oil
rich in fatty acids and vitamins. Melts on contact with the skin. My favorite Herbaceous oil with Babasu Oil is the BASIC Herbaceous oil.
  • Ximenia oil
Rich in Vitamin c and unsaturated fatty acids. Has the he power to restructure hair.
  • Olive oil (both)
monounsaturated fat, omega- and omega-3 fatty acids.
Sealing oils
Sealing oils locks and seal moisture or dry ness in or out of the hair and/ or skin.
These oils Do not penetrate the hair shaft and will sit on top of the hair because these oils do not absorb well. Sealing oils are Best used to twist or braid hair after leave in is applied. If you use a sealing oil before conditioner,  it will lock in dryness and lock out the product you are using on your hair.
Ever use an oil or oil product and it sit on your hair or skin allll Day??
Well that could mean one of three things :
  • It is a sealing oil
  • It is mixed with synthetic oils
  • You used too much.
Here's a few examples of sealing oils :
  • Castor oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Shea butter
  • Olive oil
I hope that this will serve you on your healthy hair journey. I'd love to know what are some of your favorite oils and why.
